Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Begin your Canadian Train Trip – Arrive in Montreal The first words you hear after arriving in Montreal will no doubt be in the rolling, fluid language of the locals – French. Speak to most residents in English though, and they will show you how bilingual the city is as they switch right over to flawless English. Montreal has you hooked from this moment!Day 2 – French Canada’s Hub - Tour Montreal Take a trip back in time when you stop at the gorgeous Notre Dame Basilica and learn through osmosis by visiting the campus of McGill University. You cap off the day with a view from the top of Montreal’s namesake – Mont Royal. Translated as “Royal Mountain,” the view from the top is as rich as the French royalty of old.
Day 3 – From Metropolis to History – Montreal to Quebec City on VIA Rail’s Corridor Travel through some of Quebec’s most picturesque countryside today as your Canadian train trip heads toward Quebec City. You watch as the water of the St. Lawrence River glistens in the sunlight and the charming town of Cap-de-la-Madeleine passes beyond the train’s window. Step off the train and into a little bit of Europe - right in Canada!
With a historic city wall, cobble stone streets, and centuries old heritage buildings, Quebec City has an old world air that can’t be found elsewhere in North America.
Day 4 – Explore Quebec City – Quebec City to Gaspé on the Chaleur Train Spend your day exploring Quebec City on your own. See the Chateau Frontenac, Place Royale, and Place d’Armes. A visit to the Museum of Civilization will not be a disappointment! Be sure to stop for an afternoon snack of Quebecois brew and poutine.
After a full day in Quebec City you are rocked to sleep on the Chaleur train as you continue your Canadian train trip toward Gaspé.
Day 5 – Canadian Atlantic Coast – Arrive in Gaspé Wake-up early this morning – Baie des Chaleurs rolls into view as dawn brightens the horizon. One of the helpful onboard attendants converts your sleeping cabin into comfortable lounge seating and you enjoy a tasty breakfast while watching the coastal scenery come into view. Red bluffs, sandbars and salmon rivers are just outside your window. The calm, serene scenes as you enter the Gaspé Peninsula soothe you and you welcome the laid back pace of the region.
Day 6 – Discover Forillon National Park – Gaspé to Percé A bit of personal attention starts your day off right as you meet with your private driver-guide. Forillon National Park is a literal land’s end and it’s all yours to explore today! Picture a massive natural area, carved out of mountains, cliffs, and surrounded by the sea. Natural Quebec is as awe inspiring as its big cities. You drive along the Atlantic coast and do your best to keep your focus on the road.
Day 7 – Explore Bonaventure Island – Tour the Percé Region Covered in the deep green of mature trees, Bonaventure Island sits close to the mainland and captures your gaze from Percé’s sandy shore. A short cruise brings you to the island, where a breathtaking view awaits - 250,000 birds nest here. Bonaventure is like a land all its own – so close to town, yet a mecca for fragile wildlife. You cruise past Percé Rock – the limestone structure standing tall above the ocean below. Water slowly laps against its sides, mirroring the serene, unconcerned atmosphere around you.
Day 8 – Canadian Train Trip Continues to Montreal on VIA Rail’s Chaleur Train Purchases from the quaint town’s art galleries and local treasure shops fill any leftover space in your suitcase this morning. Percé’s reputation as a beachside destination stretches back into the 1930’s and this afternoon’s stroll around the village shows you why.
Return to your comfortable train car today and travel back to Montreal. The amazing food, service and scenery never ceases to impress you.
Day 9 – Far too Soon – Depart Montreal With the memories of your Quebec train trip ripe in your mind, your journey comes to an end when your train arrives in Montreal and you are taken to Montreal airport.
