Day 1 – Arrive in Vancouver
There is a chill in the air as you arrive in Vancouver and breathe in the fresh, cool air. The west coast has a milder climate than the mountains, so this is a great way to ease yourself into a Canadian winter. Stay overnight in Vancouver.
Day 2 – Tour Vancouver, then Travel to Jasper on VIA Rail’s The Canadian
Vancouver has a wonderful blend of big city cultural attractions and stunning natural beauty. Check out the great galleries, restaurants and shopping that the city has to offer and pick up a few cold-weather supplies before you head to the Rockies (such as a cozy wool toque to keep your ears warm).
In the evening you will board your comfy cabin on The Canadian, where you can relax and unwind in comfort. Dine on delicious gourmet meals with your fellow travellers while you watch the snowy winter scenery out the window. Tonight the rocking motion of the train will lull you to sleep in your comfortable private cabin.
Day 3 – Arrive in Jasper
Awake on The Canadian train and look out your window to see an amazing mountain landscape covered in a magical dusting of fresh snow. The trees look like towering ice creatures, the snow piling heavy on their boughs. The sunlight pours down and makes the frost and icicles sparkle like diamonds. Arrive in the small town of Jasper and breathe the fresh and cold mountain air.
Day 4 – Explore the Canadian Rockies
Today is a day to visit some of the most spectacular areas of Jasper National Park and see them in their frozen winter glory. Your naturalist guide will show you where to spot mountain wildlife and if you are feeling adventurous you can even put on some ice cleats and explore the floor of Maligne Canyon to see amazing ice and rock formations up close.
Day 5 – Icefields Parkway
Travel down one of the most scenic highways in the world - The Icefields Parkway. As glaciers and enormous mountain peaks surround you on all sides, you will be in awe at the natural beauty of the Rockies.
Arrive in gorgeous Lake Louise, where you can take a lakeside sleigh ride or a snowshoe tour to admire the snowy landscape. Afterwards, cozy up at the luxurious Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for a delicious gourmet meal.
Day 6 – Lake Louise to Banff
Spend the morning relaxing and admiring the beauty of Lake Louise, then travel to the mountain town of Banff. This small mountain town is exciting, lively and has plenty to explore, from locally owned fudge and ice cream shops, unique gift shops, quirky clothing boutiques and art galleries featuring creations by Canadian artists. Take a stroll along Banff Avenue and check it out!
Day 7 – Banff Heli-Tour
An astounding Banff helicopter tour will take you on a thrilling ride above the mountain landscapes, high above the snow-covered craggy peaks, enormous glaciers and vast valleys. You will soar above Goat Range Pass, Spray Valley and along the Sundance Range of Banff National Park.
The grand finale of the tour is Mount Assiniboine, a towering 3,511 metre peak known as the “Matterhorn of the Canadian Rockies”. Also, you have the option to take a shorter helicopter ride and meet a team of sled-dogs who will take you racing through the trails of the snow back-country.
Day 8 – Depart from Calgary
Your Rocky Mountain winter vacation must sadly come to an end, but the amazing memories you have made will last forever! We will take you to the Calgary airport so that you can catch your flight home. Bon voyage!
